Congratulations to all who participated in the race yesterday. Although the race was cancelled I think everyone had a chance to see how there legs were working especially on the way out…

Please can I reiterate, staying on your own side of the road is VITAL, for yourself and the driver of the vehicle. The cyclist clipped a wheel and feel into the oncoming traffic.

Be alert on your bicycle, and when riding in a bunch look ahead, not only at the wheel in front of you but also what is happening at the front of the bunch.

Interval training is an integral part of training – not always the nicest, but is essential. (hill repeats)

Please note as we get closer to the Argus we need to start doing faster rides, as to simulate the race, so on Saturday we will ride to Balito at a faster pace than normal and when we turn the group will race back Please don’t get despondent, if you get dropped, work harder pace back.

Well done to those that rode Ride for Sight this weekend…

Racing is the best practice for the big day (for most of us) the Argus is just 4 weeks away…

We have done our building blocks long steady rides, and we can see the benefits from when we started out on doing geoghan. We now need to rest and let the muscles recover before we start the ugly stuff. I say ugly stuff as it is hard intense painful intervals which none of like to do. BUT this is an exceptionally important part of racing.

You know when the gun goes off and the bikes race down the road and on the first hill you are left at the back of the bunch and then the whole race you are trying to play catch up… well next week is the time we start to train our bodies to remember pain and endure and enjoy… (did I say enjoy) ….

Tuesday 04h30 Engen

Cowies – nice and easy

Wednesday 04h30 Engen

Ottawa

Thursday 04h30 Engen

Circuits – easy

Friday 04h30 Engen

Coffee ride

Saturday 04h30 Ballito and back

Sunday 05h00 Engen

(for those that are not going to Mid mar Knotts

Midmar Knotts Race …. If you are able to do this it is a great practise for the Argus…..

According to our training programme we are on a recover week so please use this week to ride easily and just enjoy being on your bike.

If you are racing on Sunday at Midmar Knotts you want to do the race with fresh legs….if not then use this week also to recover and then you will ensure you are strong for next week’s intervals.

JERSEY ORDERS

We will be ordering another set of jerseys, however we will not receive this before the argus. If you are keen to order please email glen your size ( Retro or Normal)

glenglen@law.co.za

kind regards

Hi Guys,

Another good weekend under the belt. Sorry if you receive two copies of the programme as I have noticed some of your emails are not on the Kings Park Riders list. I will join them together.

Well done to each and everyone who managed the geoghan ride. It was great to see so many of us out there and as you can see a big group leads to all sorts of extra problems. One punctures, two keeping to the left of the road (so important ) and also having different ability riders.

For the Argus riders, we have one more BUILDING weekend (BIG ONE) and thereafter we are going to back off and start quality, which will involve shorter but FASTER rides.

This Saturday we are going to do geoghan again, however we will be going via Ballito, Umhlali and back along the back rode and then turn up geoghan (near hollo). Same time should be estimated. 4hrs45mins…. It will be good if you all can make it again. As we saw the weather can change how we feel.

Important Tips :

Bring an energy bar or banana or apple, eat on the two hour mark

Ensure you have two large bottles and practise to carry these with you, and learn to ride your 100km with only 2 bottles. (without stopping)

An important tip for the argus carry a small bottle in the back of your pocket to drink and throw away whilst you are waiting at the start – so when you eventually start the race you have 2 full bottles (and not 1 and ½ bottles)

Safety – it is so important to ride on the yellow line and not in the road…. We must respect the road users and ensure safety of our group is utmost

So back to the cycling…. Midmar Knotts is the weekend of the 19th Feb (not this weekend) so don’t forget to pre-enter.

See you tomorrow…..

QUICK OVERVIEW

Wednesday 04h30 Engen

Thursday 04h30 Engen

Kwazulu Natal Cycling
KZN Road Champs voted best ever Road Championship
The KZN provincial Road Championships held in Durban and Westville over the past weekend, has been hailed by participants as probably the best ever Provincial/National championship they have ever ridden.
On Saturday the 21st January, the time trial was held on a circuit around the Durban Country club. The course measured up to World Standards that allowed the riders to really push their ability. The 8.5km circuit attracted high speeds. The Time Trial is a race of truth, and veteran Brett Berriman defied the field with a great ride and the fastest time of the day. One of Cycling SA’s Olympic hopeful, Cherise Taylor averaged over 48km’s per hour for the event, comfortably winning the ladies Elite title on what she described as one of the best Time Trial courses she had ever ridden.
The road race on Sunday was a spectacular affair. Some of the country’s top mountain bikers taking part in the event, there were always going to be fireworks, and the participants did not disappoint the spectators. The course followed a 14km circuit up and down both sides of the M13 freeway from Westville to 45th Cutting. The men and women’s events had a group start for Juniors, U23, Elite and Vets, who were all competing for the overall KZN Championship trophy as well as their respective category championship.
The Men had 9 laps of the circuit and by the end of the first lap it was evident that there was some serious racing. The circuit enabled spectators to watch as the race progressed. Myles Van Muschenbrook (Tasol), made an early attempt on the 4th lap to break away from the constant attacks and surges. By the 5th lap, Myles and Aston Davies had built up a 1min30 lead, with 56km’s to go. This lead soon evaporated and by the end of the 6th lap the bunch was together pushing over 400 watts per lap. On lap 8 the big attack came with Burry Stander (Specialised) and Kevin Evans(360life) making a break. The attack was so severe, the bunch splintered and soon enough Stander and Evans had amassed a 2minute lead going into the last lap. Evans tried to shake Stander off his wheel in the final climb, knowing that the younger rider had a very powerful sprint, but Stander stuck with him over the crest and then attacked at that point. Evans stayed on Standers wheel and the two had a sprint finish over the last 200 meters. Stander took the win with Evans in 2nd place. Kevin’s 360Life team mates James Reid and David George finished 3rd and 4th place respectively with Reid taking the U23 win from Brendon Davids (Specialised Sho-Air) and RourkeCroeser finishing off the podium.
Cherise Taylor (Nashua Mobile) had opted to rather race with the Elite men in her preparation for the year. Cherise finished 6th overall 20 minutes behind the leaders, showing that she will be a force to be reckoned with. The ladies race was also filled with some great racing. The women did 8 laps, with a constant battle of cat and mouse being played out. The surprise package in this race was Junior women Heidi Dalton (Nashua). Heidi attacked with a lap to go and powered her way to an unassailable lead. Dalton put her head down and rode the last 14 km’s in true time trial fashion and took line honours as Overall women champion as well as clinching the Junior ladies crown.
The event was held as a dry run for the upcoming SA Vets, Masters and School road cycling championships to be held over the same courses from 22-25 March 2012. KZN cycling would like to thank eThekwini municipality and metro police for the road closure, Hoopers VW for supplying back up vehicles and the residents of Westville and Durban.

Sorry for the delay in sending off my mail to all this week. This have been a little hectic at work!

I have attached our Argus training programme again as there are quite a few of you who might have missed it. Sorry for those who are getting it second time round. (promise if wont be a third)

Don’t forget to log your rides as this is important to establish to see how you are proving the more riding you do, or the opposite way round.

Cycling is a wonderful sport. The more you put in the more you get out…. Hard Work though….

Thursday 04h30 Circuits

Normal stuff – hang in until you get dropped. Tip for circuits….. look for a steady good strong wheel. Important – look at ahead of the bunch and not only at the wheel you are sitting behind…stay with the pack on the corners so your heart rate stays steady and you don’t go anaerobic.

Friday 04h30 Bluff

Steady fast ride around the bluff circuit. For those wanting only coffee they can turn at the smooth road (as per normal and go for coffee)

Saturday 04h30 Oscars /Essenwood Road

Group will meet outside Oscars video store and go inland – heading to the top of Inchanga.

If you want to come and turn early, find a buddy who will turn early with you. Time on this turning at Kearsney is a 3 hour ride, Inchanga is a 3.30/4.00 hour ride.

Saturday 05h00 Engen

I am leaving this ride open to who ever has time restraints or for anyone who only wants to ride on the flat road and wants to do an easy ride.

I am encouraging all to ride inland with me, as you can ask anyone that has ridden inland it is a steady easy ride up the hills and then we ride back.

Sunday 05h00 Engen

We will ride South Coast to Scottburgh on Sunday unless the wind is howling in the opposite direction. If so we will go the other way. Into the head wind first and back with a tail wind. 110km

Please don’t forget to cheer on our fellow cyclists who are competing at Natal Champs this weekend. Time trial on the circuits at Kings Park and the Road race up the M13 (45th cutting, past Norwood Shopping Mall to the bottom of Cowies and back) laps of this circuit.

Good luck and lets hope the rain stays away.

See you in the morning

Paula
